New Lost City Ramblers
- Early Years 1958-62
This group headed by Mike Seeger was the best and most influential
of the "Old Timey" folk groups. They strove to accurately reproduce the
sound that they heard on old 78s and Library of Congress recordings
from
the 1920s and 1930s.

Phil Ochs -
There
But for Fortune
His lyrics were the most overtly political. He died tragically at an
early age; as far as I know, he is the only artist on this page not
still
alive.

Eric Andersen -
Violets
of Dawn
Eric wrote the most personal and introspective songs of the lot,
presaging
today's singer/songwriters. Remember "I'll write you a letter on
a Dusty Box Car Wall"?
This July 1999 release is a 20-bit remastered Vanguard Sessions
compilation
of the best of his 1960's work for Vanguard. Also, Eric made new
recordings this year of classic folk-revival songs by Fred Neil, Phil
Ochs,
Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Peter LaFarge, Paul Siebel,
David Blue, Patrick Sky, and EA himself, including the newly penned
title
song The
Street Was Always There. Eric Andersen gives these
passionate
songs the emotional intensity they deserve. It is evident that Andersen
believes in the messages, and that he sings from the heart, not from
nastalgia.
He sounds very natrual singing these songs, preserves their integrity,
while making them sound fresh and contemporary.

With his rich voice and impeccable phrasing, Tom probably had the best

Club
47 Concert Series (named in honor of the legendary Club 47 Mount
Auburn
in Cambridge, Mass. where Joan Baez got her start).
